Entry 8 Winfeild Gage to Grafton Harbor

Dave and Nate now continue the journey a crew of two facing the many adventures that the river has to offer. After Hannibal they found an island with a giant swing where they set up for the afternoon. They made a campfire, cooked up some catfish (which were delicious for the now), caught toads, and picked wild huckleberries without the most innocent intentions in mind. Finishing up at the island they crossed over to another with a poetic sunset fading in the background. Camp was made with a coon trap being set up, but the morning light would unfortunately reveal that these intentions were unsuccessful. Friday morning they set out hoping to conquer lock 24. Floating was smooth until a little to much complaining inevitably brought on rain which continued through the lock and the evening. A spot was found and camp was made in the increasing heat and humidity of the evening. Hoping to beat the heat the guys decided to leave the doors wide open and place there faith in a new technology for killing mosquitoes. They were promptly eaten alive until an offensive was organized at 3:00 in the morning. With barely any sleep and a new valuable lesson learned they headed out again. Saturday was smooth sailing exchanging waves and photos with a million dollar plus yacht the only other vessel on the water. On to lock 25 where a little bit of motor problems made the situation a little more tense in the "holding area." The lock was conquered without incident and the boys continued on to setup camp that night. It would be awhile before camp was set up as Bear Naked came under attack by flying fish. 10 pounders plus long as your arm began jumping on, in, and around the boat. Armed with flashlights and nets the boys caught a few then anchored down for the night. The next morning would bring more of the adventure/attacks as they headed down to a  local marina. Bear Naked took a beating as screens were broken, but the guys ended up catching 16 of them. Proudly they went in to the marina only to be told that their catch was worthless as the fish were Japanese carp and crap to eat, and so kamikaze fishing was invented. Bear Naked was refueled and repaired as the boys set out to enjoy the Sunday morning and afternoon on the water. Apparently everyone else thought Sunday was the day to be on the water as well. Large yachts and speed boats kept Bear Naked rocking and swaying all day long. We floated for a while and enjoyed seeing people on the water for a change. It reminded us we weren't the only humans still in existence. We finally ended up mooring up for the night in Grafton Harbor in Grafton, IL. With showers and a shave the crew was feeling ready to go out on the town. After talking to several locals at the Grafton Harbor Bar and Grill for quite a few hours we wandered over to a place called the "Finn Inn". We had some awesome double cheeseburgers while we watched 200 pound turtles and huge fish swim next to the booth we sat in. A really marine feeling place to grab some food. The waitress recommended fish but for some reason we just did not feel like fish was what we wanted.  We stumbled back to the Bear Naked and crashed for the night. Today we head for St. Louis, we should be there tomorrow.
