Entry 4 Quincy to Hannibal

We left Quincy on day 4 and headed for Lock 21. Funny story about that lock. We got put through with a large barge ship, but it wasn't any ship. It was the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. The funny part is that when they were entering the lock chamber the barge spun and hit the end of the lock. So much for all that river experience. We hugged the Illinois side and found a chute to float down and swim in. Water was real nice on a hot day. We came into Hannibal and we passed the Mark Twain steamer. The steamer is gives tours on the river in Hannibal. We ported in Hannibal and went looking for the world famous Mark Twain Caves. We found them. Its a local tourist attraction and its a series of cave that stretch for miles underground. Mark Twain used to play in the caves as a boy and actually based the caves in Tom Sawyer on these caves. Jesse James also used the caves as a local hideout. We toured the town and everything is Mark Twain and Tom Sawyer. We also climbed the bluffs and found the light house that over looked Hannibal and the river. I guess that Bear Naked was right at home. Spent the night there and the train was none to welcoming. Today comes the big day. Dan goes home and the crew will be reduced to Nate and Dave. Just the two of them on a great big river. Wish us luck with our two man voyage. Next stop Louisiana, Missouri.
